I must admit that G'Mork did kind of scare me when I was little. Also, when I was a kid, I also had a crush on Empress :P
I would love a remake of this film, but I really don't want another Atreau (probably totally screwed up that name). I'm not really sure if they could make it better now than the original.
Remakes can work I suppose but it's all in how the material is handled. Unfortunately today's solution to everything is to film it in 3-D and stuff it full of CGI.
I think what makes these older films charming and more believable is that you see the puppets and costumes but the writing and acting bridge the gap to make them real. The best CGI still sucks if it's all flash with nothing behind it.
I'm still surprised how great some of the special effects were with the puppets in Neverending Story. Like you though, I think they would throw 3D at the remake and overdo the CGI to make it just look cheezy. We will see though, if it ever happens ;)
For years I had to watch this movie with a blanket just so I had something to hide under when this fellow was on-screen. Great job capturing the sheer menace of the creature.
